On Monday, 28 April 2025, at 12:33, a major power blackout occurred across the Iberian Peninsula affecting mainland Portugal and peninsular Spain, where electric power was interrupted for about ten hours in most of the Peninsula and longer in some areas. According to the Spanish electrical operator Red Eléctrica de España (REE), there was sufficient power supplied to the grid leading up to the outage with more than half of Spain’s electricity supply (59%) from solar.
The incident could have been significantly mitigated through the strategic deployment and active management of smart inverters, battery energy storage systems (BESS) and active demand management in the region.
The presentation highlights GEN-I’s latest innovation efforts utilizing its existing and growing portfolio of green electricity solutions – small, mid and large scale solar power plants – portfolio of distributed energy storage systems and managed loads – e-chargers and heat pumps – in connection with real time energy trading to create additional offerings of flexibility. Such complex mix of flexibility sources properly managed and presented as a simple tu use service to grid operators, trading partners and GEN-I’s own customers represents additional, largely still untapped revenue stream for GEN-I and its customers thus turning increasing distributed green energy generation challenges into profitable solutions for itself and its customers.
